Explanations of content types

All information published with a Naaya site is contained in objects of several types.

Folders are containers of objects, much like folders on a computer. Administrators can restrict what types of objects are allowed in each folder.

HTML Documents are plain web pages. They can be made up of formatted text and images.

Files are containers for uploaded files, with associated metadata. Users can download these on their computers.

News items represent bits of short-lived information. They have expiry dates so they get automatically removed from news listings.

Event objects describe events, with an associated date. They are useful for interacting with calendar utilities.

Stories are intended to be used for articles with a more permanent character than news.

URL objects wrap links to remote pages, with associated metadata.

Pointer objects represent shortcuts to objects in the same portal. They function like shortcuts on a personal computer.

Media File objects represent movies that can be displayed with an embedded media player.

Geo Point objects represent map markers. They have associated metadata and appear on an interactive map.

Hands-on: publishing workflow

  1. Open up the training website:
  2. Create an account: Login (top menu underneath logo) > Create an account (under "New user" title) - please fill all fields.
  3. Log in with your new account.
  4. Go to the "Exercise Content" section (from the left sidebar).
  5. Ask the administrator to grant you "Contributor" role ("Submit" menu appears).
  6. Create a new folder ("Submit" > "Folder"), use your name as title.
  7. The folder is not visible yet; ask the administrator to approve it.
  8. Go inside the new folder; create an object of type URL, titled "European Community CHM", with the address "", using "chmlink" as a keyword.
  9. Ask the administrator to grant you administrator privileges.
  10. Approve your file: click on the "Approvals" link, check the "Approve" checkbox, click "Save changes".

Hands-on: file management - edit, delete, move, order, restrict

  1. Navigate to the tutorial folder (, click the checkbox next to "Spectacular opening for Olympics", click the "Copy" button.
  2. Navigate back to your folder (with your name as title) and click on "Paste" - the document should appear in your own folder now.
  3. Create a new folder inside your folder, named "Some Documents".
  4. Move the two objects in your folder (the link and the document) to the new "Some Documents" folder by using the "cut" and "paste" buttons.
  5. From inside the "Some Documents" folder click on the "Restrict" button, select the "Allow access only to..." radio button, and select "Contributor" - only people with Contributor (or Administrator) role can browse that folder. You can check by logging out and trying to access the folder.

Hands-on: how to use the HTML editor

  1. Create a new HTML Document object in your folder.
  2. Enter a title ("Parrot") and short description ("Deroptyus: Hawk-headed parrot").
  3. Open a new browser tab, navigate to this page:
  4. Select and copy the page's content; paste this into the "Body" field of the new document. Notice that images and links have been preserved. This should be avoided. Undo (control-z) this operation.
  5. Click on the "paste as plain text" button at the top of the "Body" field, paste, click "Insert". Manually restore the formatting of the text (headings, lists, etc).
