For lakes, there are close to 6000 water bodies (43% of the total number), or close to 31 000 km² (39% of total lakes surface area) reported to be in less than good ecological status or potential. The main causes for the poor ecological status or potential in these lake WBs are emissions from diffuse sources coming from agricultural pollution, causing nutrient enrichment, as well as hydromorphological changes causing altered habitats.
