At the highest levels of population density and proportion of arable land (more than 200 inhabitants per km² and 40% arable land), less than 25% of the classified river water bodies are in good or better ecological status or potential, and between one third and half of these water bodies are reported to be in poor or bad ecological status or potential.  At this highest level of the two major drivers, as much as 80-90% of the river water bodies are exposed to significant pressures, with diffuse pollution and hydromorphological alterations affecting 60-70% of the classified river water bodies.
