1.2.    Hydromorphological pressures and habitat alterations

Europe’s surface freshwaters are affected by major modifications, such as water abstractions, water flow regulations (dams, weirs, sluices, and locks) and morphological alterations, straightening and canalisation, and disconnection of flood plains.  These are called hydromorphological pressures.

    Adequate space for water courses and lake shores to develop their natural dynamics: This is one of the most significant issues in regard to Hydromorphology and must absolutely be added to the list discussed in this chapter, as well as in Chapter 4.1.
