7.3.1.      Country examples of altered river habitats

In Europe many rivers and streams were channelized and straightened, total stream length was shortened, many connected side-arms got lost, and the number of oxbow lakes reduced. There are many national examples illustrating that a large proportion of waters have been significantly modified.  On the following pages is listed a number of country assessments of the state of river habitats.

We would like to propose an other case study for France.

Thanks to a common work led by Water agencies, ONEMA and the French ministry for environment, a collection of river hydromorpholy restoration examples has been published. The collection presents more than 60 examples of river hydromorphology restoration undertaken over the past 20 years gathered throughout France. These actions aim to preserve river hydromorphology or to re-establish hydromorphological processes of the watercourses.
