In addition to hydro-morphological changes, more than half the surface water bodies in Europe are reported in the 1^st cycle RBPMs as not meeting GES or GEP, requiring mitigation measures in order to meet WFD objectives (Figure 2.2). The main pressure responsible for this is diffuse pollution causing nutrient enrichment. An in depth analysis of the pressures, status and impact can be found in the ‘European Waters: Assessment of Status and Pressures’ report (EEA (report under preparation) 2012a).
