I apologise for being late in replying. I have comments on two of the indicator factsheets. 18b N and P in rivers. I understand from the ETC that the 'UK' data in Figure 2a (and I presume 2b and elsewhere) are in fact for England and Wales, excluding the South West region of England, which was unfortunately the only data provided in 2001. This is important as the areas excluded tend to have relatively low levels of phosphorus compared to some areas of England which were included. Data for the whole of England and Wales have since been submitted under the latest Priority Data Flows round, so if it is at all possible the analysis should be repeated to use this data - even if Scottish or Northern Ireland data are not available yet the complete data for England and Wales would be better than the incomplete data for England and Wales available last year. If it is impossible to update the analysis, the figure should be footnoted to accurately describe the data used. I would suggest changing the 'UK' label to 'England and Wales' and also have a footnote saying "England and Wales data exclude South Western region, therefore may not be fully representative", or if the UK label cannot be changed, "UK figure uses data for England and Wales only, less South Western region, therefore may not be fully representative". Nitrates in groundwater The UK data used here are from a very limited 1998 data set supplied as part of a 1999/2000 trial. Again, if possible the analysis should be re-run to use the data set supplied during this year's Priority Data Flow, as this is larger and more representative.
